An antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a publication on the barrows of England in which she documents her discoveries of treasures in. In the event that an interesting letter brings her to the small village of Bewlay, tucked away in the countryside far from any other, she embarks on train and her assistant to leave for a few days behind.
The mysterious man that summoned her to help is missing upon her arrival. Her assistant never arrives. A stubborn landowner refuses entry to her barrow. The locals are afraid of this woman, who travels alone. wears trousers.
